Challenge

E-waste is Australia’s fastest-growing waste stream, comprising hazardous materials and valuable resources. In 2020, Scipher Technologies was founded in Melbourne with the ambition to become the country’s leading recycling enterprise. Scipher utilises cutting-edge, eco-friendly tech to extract raw materials from e-waste, supporting a low-carbon economy and embracing the motto “powering the circular economy.”

Aim

After a few years of growth and a significant acquisition, Scipher needed to refine its image. Collier Creative was engaged to develop a comprehensive brand strategy, messaging platform, and visual identity. A workshop led to the overarching positioning message, “Powering the circular economy.” This stemmed from Scipher’s aim to transform e-waste recovery. A compelling elevator pitch, brand architecture, and a makeover for acquisition partner Total Green Recycling’s logo were part of the strategic process, reflecting an authentic and accessible tone of voice.

Idea

With the brand strategy established, the creative concept focused on ‘full circle business.’ The circular icon in Scipher’s logo inspired a series of graphic pictograms that visually conveyed their circular economy concept. These symbols, when combined, narrated Scipher’s business story. The design incorporated an environmentally influenced colour palette, featuring light and dark greens with a touch 
of fresh blue and hints of black, creating a bold and modern visual identity.

Experience

From the start of the branding initiative, Scipher’s marketing strategy determined that a new, bolder, more compelling website would become the company’s communications hub to engage key stakeholders and drive quality new business leads. Collier Creative was enlisted to revamp the website in line with Scipher’s vision, objectives, and marketing strategy. This included a complete overhaul of site strategy, architecture, storytelling, and design, with a new photoshoot to project a confident and forward-thinking image. Scipher’s fresh branding was extended to various touchpoints like the annual report, corporate stationery, social media, and advertising. A comprehensive visual identity style guide and core branding assets were developed to ensure consistent implementation.

Since its launch, the company has constantly received positive feedback, particularly in the way stakeholders talk about the business and its service offerings.

Outcome

Following the new website’s launch, Scipher’s founder, Chris Sayers commented that he found the branding and website processes enlightening and rewarding. He expressed pride and excitement about the final results, which had exceeded his expectations. Scipher’s advisory firm, AGBF also lauded the website’s new fresh look and acknowledged the effort involved. While it’s still early days, anecdotal feedback indicates that the refreshed Scipher branding has been well-received by both internal and external stakeholders. The marketing team now feels more confident with a contemporary toolbox and messaging platform. The mission to spread Scipher’s ‘circular economy’ narrative is now in full swing.
